Understanding Personal Care for Men.

Men need clean personal care just as much as women. Nearly all store-bought products contain some unwanted combination of active and inactive ingredients. Just like women, men deserve the opportunity to seek products that do not have added sulfates, parabens, phthalates, petrochemicals, synthetic fragrances, dyes, synthetic colorants, or EDTA.

Personal care products tend to have a laundry list of undesired ingredients with poor overall regulation. The EWG has written on this extensively on their Skin Deep website. On their site, many of the known personal care ingredients are ranked according to known research on laboratory animal, and occasionally human, subjects. There is a consensus amongst several health and longevity experts that theorize natural aging could actually be a result of our environmental stress factors that impose on our body over time.

The unfortunate reality is that we only have control of a portion of our environment. Some things are unavoidable such as air pollution or groundwater contamination. However, we can choose to limit the overall exposure of environmental contaminants by seeking safer personal care products. This is why I almost always make my own soaps, creams, lotions, and body sprays. I am ultimately in control of most, or all, of my ingredients. By utilizing essential oils and organic carrier oils, we can aid in reducing overall accumulated exposure to the aforementioned toxins.

In reality, the integumentary system (our skin) is the largest organ system in the body. Remember that any time you are putting anything directly onto it. Although it serves as the first barrier in immunology, it can also serve as a conduit to the bloodstream for whatever we place onto it.
