How to Make Your Own Reed Diffuser
It wasn’t until recently that I made myself a Reed diffuser, and oh my goodness, I’m in love with these as a way of diffusing my Young Living Essential Oils! Christmas in July sort of put me in the mood to share about these holiday staples. But why just use them around the holidays, they are wonderful all year long! I put one of these in every bathroom, because they smell amazing and are a great decoration piece too.
Reed Diffusers are great for small spaces, places without outlets, or areas where I can not put a Young Living diffuser. Once I made myself one, I realized these are the perfect gift too! I mean, I see people buy these as gifts but now I can create a special gift from the heart. Doing it yourself means so much more than a store bought Reed Diffuser, plus its so simple and you can put your own special twist on things. For example, finding the glass jar that fits their personality or house, using a blend of oils that they love, and adding their favorite color ribbon to the bottle. For me, these seem like they make the best teacher or colleague gift for their desk at work, send these home as a party favor, or just simply catching up with old friends before heading back to college, I can think of tons of people who need a Reed Diffuser. Plus, Fall will be here before we know it, and that certainly is the season of giving.
Here are the supplies you need:
-Use a cute glass container with a narrow opening to ensure that the essential oils do not evaporate quickly . Here are some really cute ones I found from amazon:
Perfect style - https://amzn.to/2LmC1f0
Cute, simple, and have caps for the container- https://amzn.to/2OgNgmY
-Each diffuser will need 4-5 reed diffuser sticks: https://amzn.to/2LmC1f0
-1/4 cup sweet almond oil, its a light oil which will allow the blend to move quickly up the diffuser sticks
-10 drops of favorite essential, right now Lemon or Lavender would be perfect, once fall is here my favorite would be Christmas Spirit.
Here is how to put it together:
-First mix the essential oils and carrier oil together in the glass container.
-Place the diffuser sticks in the container.
-Allow the essential oil mixture to travel up the reed diffuser sticks. It may take awhile for the blend to travel up the sticks, you can speed up the process by flipping the sticks after several hours or also by adding a dash of Witch Hazel to speed up the process of the mixture moving through reeds
-Continue to flip the sticks every few days to refresh the scent.
-Replace the reeds when they become completely saturated.
-Replenish the oil supply eventually too, this will depend on what type of essential oils, container, and carrier oil you are using.
If you are making this as a gift, here are a few tips:
I would include a couple replacement rods with the gift, a information card with information on the essential oil and how to use the reed diffuser. The cute Reed Diffuser container, carrier blend mixture, and a 5 ml bottle of Christmas Spirit or Lavender would be a perfect gift. To finish your gift or own personal reed diffuser, add a cute decorative ribbon to the top of the jar.
Extra fun idea:
I have actually seen people make these and hang them in areas too! By using a Christmas ornament, you create a hang-able reed diffuser. You will need smaller reed sticks. You can hang these on your Christmas tree or even use them in you car as well. I have not done this yet, but I am looking forward this year on my Christmas Tree. If you need to freshen up your car, hang the ornament reed diffuser from your review mirror, of course in a way that allows you to see.
I thought these ideas were such a great way to diffuse our essential oils. It's also a great way to get crafty with your kids. I hope you enjoy!
