The Best DIY After Sun Spray for Cooling Sun Kissed Skin

I spend a lot of time outdoors in the spring and summer. Since I don't live in area to be exposed to the sun all year, my skin feels the effects from long hours in the sun particularly early in the warmer season. Right now when the days are just starting to feel like summer and I tend to forget how powerful the sun can be.

I like to turn to my essential oils if I've had too much sun because of how supporting they can be for irritated skin. In the past, I would cover myself with store bought gels that would leave me feeling really sticky. Unfortunately, I also know now that they are full of chemicals. While Aloe Vera may have many positive properties to support your skin, here is a short review from National Library of Medicine, I have learned over the last several years that other ingredients may be doing more damage than good.

Our skin is actually our largest organ of out body. One of its functions that has many different and complex mechanisms is called dermal absorption. One of the main reasons why I am here today sharing about clean products. There are many proposed ways that molecules enter the body through the skin. These things have made me consider what I put something on my skin because those ingredients most likely are getting absorbed into the body and often found in the blood stream.

These days, I avoid the laundry list of ingredients found on traditional bottles and turn to making my own products at home.  Besides having a frugal husband makes me consider the value of my money too. I can grab a bottle of Organic Aloe Vera online to make so many bottles of my own DIY After Sun Spray for a minimal cost compared to store bought. I'll be able to add the organic Aloe Vera gel to my own mixtures with essential oils and skip out on the harmful fragrance, parabens, yellow or red ingredients that are wreaking havoc on our body.

When I happen to notice a little more red color than I wanted on my skin, I make what I consider to be a "Sun Kissed Skin" spray also known as an After-Sun Spray. I have found great relief from using this spray after a long day in the sun. In addition to the Aloe Vera Gel, there are several essential oils that may also support skin when irritated. I prefer to use lavender in this recipe because it can be soothing to the skin after a day in the sun and may help soothe minor skin irritations. It's also known for supporting healthy aging skin. I also add Peppermint Essential Oil to this recipe. Peppermint is known for it's ability to create a cool, tingling sensation on the skin when applied which can be very soothing after a day in the sun.

Throw this DIY After Sun Spray in the beach bag or even keep it in the cooler while you're out. I like to spritz this on my skin when the heat is getting to me for a refreshing mist. It's perfect for the beach and boat days! The recipe is so simple, here is how to make it.

Ingredients for DIY After Sun Spray:
  • 2 oz spray bottle
  • Lavender and Peppermint Essential Oil
  • Thayers Witch Hazel
  • Fractionated coconut oil
  • Aloe Vera Gel or Vitamin E
  • Distilled water

Directions for DIY After Sun Spray:
  • In a 2 oz spray bottle
  • Add 10 - 20 drops of Lavender and Peppermint Essential Oil
  • Add a dash of Thayers Witch Hazel and a dash of Fractionated Coconut Oil
  • Add 1-2 tablespoons of Aloe Vera Gel
  • Optional- add a little Vitamin E to the mix. Either a dropper of Vitamin E or pin a small hole in a supplement and squirt the vitamin E into the 2 oz bottle.
  • Fill the rest of the spray bottle with distilled water.
