Summer Essential Oils

Boy do I love summer...

As a teacher and a coach, it means I get to spend more time with  my husband and the dogs. We are able to travel more, spend time in the sun, and enjoy parties with our friends and family. I have found this time of year truly promotes relaxation.

All that aside, we are here to discuss oils. During the summer, I find that I use my essential oils a little bit differently. Oils are still a big part of my regular routine but I have some specific summer uses for oils that I would like to share with you guys. I have found a few DIY summer recipes that I have truly come to enjoy. They are easy to do and take only a little time and a few ingredients. Without further ado, here they are:
summer essential oil recipes
1. Summer Exfoliation Scrub:
When it’s time to be out in shorts, dresses, and swimsuits, it's nice to make a simple exfoliation to smooth my feet and legs. Here is how to make it:
  • In a mixing bowl, I add 1/4 cup either a Himalayan Pink Salt or Brown sugar, pick one they both are amazing.
  • I then mix in Grape seed oil or Fractionated Coconut Oil to the salt or sugar, really I add to a desired consistency, I like my sugar and salt scrubs to be a little on the crumbly side.
  • I then put the blend in a 2 oz jar, but you can make this in any size glass jar.
  • Then I add about 4-6 drops total of my favorite essential oils. Here are a few combinations that I enjoy: Stress Away with Lemon, Panaway with Peppermint, or Lemon with Peppermint.
  • Lastly, I mix it all together or put the cap on and shake it to blend, and I let it sit at least 20 minutes before using.

2. "Sun Kissed Skin" Spray:
Being in the dog days of summer and loving the outdoors, I typically end up being in the hot summer sun for a majority of the day. I am not here to complain however, at times my skin feels the effects of long hours in the sun! When I happen to notice a little more color than I wanted, I make what I consider to be a "Sun Kissed Skin" spray. I have found great relief from using this spray after a long day in the sun! Here is how I make it:
  • In a 2 oz spray bottle,  I add 5- 10 drops Lavender and Peppermint
  • Then, I add a dash of Thayers Witch Hazel and a dash of fractionated coconut oil
  • I also love adding a tablespoons Aloe Vera Gel or Vitamin E to the mix, they are both so good for our skin.
  • Lastly, I fill the rest with distilled water.

3. "Beach Hair, Don’t Care" Spray
I have fallen in love with this beachy spray. The smell of green tea with lavender is so  heavenly! My "Beach Hair, Don’t Care" spray helps support healthy hair growth, plus gives it that beach wave look.  Here is how I make it:
  • In a 2 oz spray bottle, I add 2 tablespoons Epsom salts or Sea Salt
  • I add ½ teaspoon jojoba
  • Then I add about 5-10 drops of Lavender, Rosemary, and Cedarwood
  • Lastly, I add 1 cup of boiling green tea water

4. "Bug Off" Spray
My Bug Off Spray is a household favorite that we use on not only ourselves, but on the dogs as well. It is better to enjoy our walks in the park, bonfires, beach days, and pool days without all the annoyance of insects buzzing and those little blood suckers from biting. I have found that there are so many essential oils that assist in keeping those things away, so I make my own bug off spray. Before we walk out the door, everyone gets a mist of the "Bug Off" Spray, even Kasey and Harper. IT REALLY WORKS!
Here is how I make it:
  • In a 2 oz spray bottle, I add 5-10 drops citronella and lemongrass ( Other essential oils that I may substitute are: Geranium, Purification, Lavender, Lemon, Thieves and Peppermint)
  • Then, I add a dash of Thayers Witch Hazel
  • Lastly, I fill the rest of the bottle with water

Well, these four DIY recipes have been so much fun to make this summer and have become a staple in our home. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do.  I outlined all of my supplies that I typically use in this post.
