DIY Homemade Bath Salts with Essential Oils

Wellness bath salts... a fun alternative way to use your oils and also share how you are using them with others!  Bath salts and Young Living essential oils work together perfectly to help flush toxins from the body. Epsom salts are believed to be an excellent addition to wellness support.* I have found that when soaking in Epsom salt diluted with warm water, both my muscles and my mind are able to finally relax! As a bonus, you have an awesome method of delivering a relaxing aroma right in your own bathroom when pairing bath salts with essential oils!

It wasn’t until about a year after I started using essential oils that I realized how amazing baths salts really were for my body.  All you have to do is try it and you will see! It took me a year to realize these were the secret wellness keeper because I always thought the only way to use them to receive any type of benefit was by taking a bath.  Quite honestly, who really has time for baths these days?
Bath Salts with Essential Oils
I have hosted plenty of workshops where I have offered bath salts as a take home gift because they are very easy to create. I am nearly ashamed to admit, at the time of those workshops I did not even use these salts myself. Guess what, after learning more about them and finally giving them a try, I use them all the time!

What changed my whole outlook on bath salts was really learning all the various ways to use them. The only way I thought I could use them for many years was taking a bath with the bath salts sprinkled in the water. Well I thought wrong because they actually work best by using them in the shower!

You can absolutely take a full body bath using bath salts, your body and mind will be still experience some benefits. I highly recommend making this a part of your self-care routine, every so often, if you have the time and space to do so. Certainly if you have children still taking baths, this is an absolutely great way to support your kids wellness.* It’s a perfect way to create a relaxing night time routine with them to help everyone get ready for bed. But, if you if you do not have the time or a tub, you can still use your bath salts, or should I say "shower salts".

I have a jar of my favorite wellness bath salts  right in my shower and all I do is sprinkle the bath salts in the shower right where where my feet will be.  During my shower, I stand on the baths salts and enjoy the steamy sauna experience right in my shower. I love doing this in the morning with uplifting and invigorating essential oils like Lemon, Peppermint, or even Eucalyptus. At night, I enjoy Lavender or Peace & Calming in my bath salts during my shower.

I remember the day I found out about this tip, I was so excited to try it out and make it a part of my wellness routine, without actually taking a bath! Ever since then, wellness bath salts have been a part of my self-care routine and I use them at least once a week. I love smelling the essential oils during my shower and I love stepping out of the shower feeling refreshed and rejuvenated.

Let me help you make them so you can see for yourself! To create your own custom bath salts you will need a glass mason jar, bath salts, and essential oils.  You could use Epsom Salt,  Pink Himalayan Salt or Dead Sea Salts too, whichever you desire but please be sure to use Epson salts with no fragrance added. Fragrance is a big red flag that there are hidden chemicals in the product, so I always make sure that I do not buy a bag that already has “oils”  added because it’s likely these products include "fragrance grade" oils which are exactly what we want to avoid! Once you have the materials, its really easy to create.

To prepare your bath salts:
  1. Pour the salts into the desired glass jar
  2. Add 6-10 drops of essential oils to the salts. You only need about 6-10 drops of essential oil for 2 cups of bath salts. Be sure to use proper dilution ratio for children. Number of essential oils will depend on the size of the jar and the person using the bath salts.  I listed a few of my favorite essential oils at the bottom of the page.
  3. Secure the lid and shake the combination of essential oils and bath salts.
  4. Let it sit for about 15-20 minutes if you plan on using the bath salts that day. I like to have a large glass mason jar prepared right in the bathroom.

Using the bath salts:
  1. Sprinkle at least 1/2 cup of your prepared bath salts into the tub as it's filling. Then relax, detox and enjoy.
Remember, If you do not have time for a bath I have another awesome tip for shower time! When I use bath salts in the shower I do the following:
  1. Put a washcloth down on the floor of the tub
  2. Then sprinkle a little bath salts on the washcloth
  3. During my shower, I stand with both feet on top of the the bath salts, on washcloth

Now, I ways have people ask, what essential oils do you use? When I make bath salts, I typically choose my "wellness blend". I choose this because, as a teacher, I can never support my immune system enough! Although, one thing I really love about using essential oils is that I can customize the essential oil recipe for what my body needs at any moment of the day. Remember, you may customize your recipe with the essential oils that you have at home or you need for your body at that given time. Here is a list of my favorites:
  • Thieves- Supports the body's natural defense*
  • Raven- Refreshing aroma, includes the naturally occurring constituents eucalyptol, menthol, and methyl salicylate
  • Lemon- Supports detox, cleansing, and it's energizing for the morning*, contains limonene
  • Peppermint- very refreshing aroma
  • Copiabia- considered soothing, referred to as a magnifier oil to boost the benefits of other essential oils
  • Frankincense- excellent grounding and calming aroma
  • Panaway - stimulating aroma, supports the appearance of healthy skin coloration

For times when I need INCREASED relaxation, soothing, and calming are needed, I use...
  • Lavender
  • Sleepyize
  • Valor
  • White Angelica
  • Peace and Calming

I hope you enjoy making and using your wellness bath salts as such as I do!
