Top 9 Roller Recipes for Essential Oils

I love using rollers to apply my essential oils topically. In my opinion, it is one of the easiest ways to use oils! These little DIY bottles are so convenient and avoid the hassle of having to take out each individual oil every single time I want to apply. The recipes below allow you to travel with your favorite pre-made blends all packaged in a convenient roller. All you have to do is remove the cap, and apply!

When I initially got started using oils, I did not know about the concept of a "roller". I would remove a specified oil, remove the cap, and drop it where I needed. This made using multiple oils at once a bit of an inconvenience.

Enter the concept of "rollers"! Looking back, I have no idea what took me so long to catch wind of this concept. It is soo easy! Once I figured out how simple and efficient it was to make your own roller blends, I began to view oils in a whole new way.

Transporting rollers is a breeze. They can be carried or stored in almost anything. From purses to diaper bags, backpacks to gyms bags, in a locker or in an end table, your blend will never have to be too far away. I love having my favorite ones in my essential oil bag that I just toss right in my oil purse or
travel case.

I use a variety of roller bottle sizes. Typically, I use 5ml or 10ml around my house. For any friends or family members that I want to give a sample, I do occasionally use the 2mL. I think that everyone can use a Stress Away roller in their pocket. All my favorite roller bottles that I use can be found on my supply page.

Below you will find some of my favorite roller recipes. Nevertheless, I still recommend you get a few essential oil books to learn some of your own preferences for these blends. Keep in mind, Young Living has over 300 essential oils. That is a ton of potential combinations. My two favorite books on this are the Oil & Glass Recipe Book and  Vitality: The Young Living Lifestyle. For all of our book recommendations, please see our books section. We also have a post where we reviewed our top 5 essential oil books.

The recipes listed below are for 10ml roller bottles and for adults only. If you are looking for roller recipes for expecting mothers, babies, children, or pets, please follow safety guidelines and proper dilution ratios. You can find these guidelines and ratios in
Gentle Babies and the Animal Essential Oil Desk Reference Guide.
Making your own rollers is actually very simple and quite a bit of fun!

Here are the steps:
  • First you will add the essential oils to the bottle. In a 10ml roller bottle, for an adult, put approximately 40 drops total of essential oils. The exact ratio depends on the types of essential oils you choose for the recipe.
  • Once you have your 40 drops total, fill the rest with a carrier oil. I rotate between fractionated coconut oil, jojoba oil, almond oil, and grapeseed oil as my carrier oil. When adding carrier oil, I use a 2 oz dropper.
  • To finish, place the roller ball on, then screw on the cap tightly, and add a label so you know what you have in that roller!
  • Keep all of your roller bottles organized by storing them in an essential oil roller stand!

When I make my rollers, I customize the blends to support my body and what I need at the time. This is where my essential oils desk reference or pocket reference guide comes in handy when choosing my oils!

When I got started using essential oils, I was really concerned about  following recipes accurately, measuring, and putting the “correct” number of essential oils in my products. If one or two extra drops get into the bottle, you will likely be fine! A little piece of advice that would have helped me greatly: Take a deep breath, and move on with your recipe! Keep in mind that each recipe includes a significant amount of carrier oil which will act as to dilute the potency of your oils. If you simply cannot go onward without worrying about potency, the remove a designated number of drops from any of the oils you did not yet use that are part of your recipe. This will allow you to stay in the neighborhood of the 40 drop total for your 10ml roller.

If you are using a 5ml bottle instead, follow a 20 drops total rule, and if I am creating these for a little one I change the recipe to follow proper dilution ratios.
Now for the Fun Part!
Here are a few of my favorite roller recipes for a
10ml bottle then when your done, add this cure vinyl label set:
1. Breathing Is Fun
  • 10 drops Raven
  • 10 drops Peppermint
  • 10 drops Frankincense
  • 10 drops Copaiba
-I rub this one on my chest before a workout, long run, or in the fall and winter months.

2. Ache No More
  • 15 drops Panway
  • 15 drops Peppermint
  • 10 drops Copaiba
-I apply directly to muscles, apply to temples or base of the brain to soothe head tension.

3. Sleep / Calm
  • 10 drops Lavender
  • 10 drops Frankincense
  • 10 drops Stress Away
- There are a lot of calming and relaxing essential oils, these three are from the starter kit which is amazing. I apply the sleep roller to the bottom of my feet before I retire at night. Other great calming oils that we have in our house are: Dream Catcher, Peace + Calming, White Angelica, Cedarwood, and Sleepyize.

4. Focus
  • 10 drops Frankincense
  • 10 drops Copaiba
  • 10 drops Lavender
  • 10 drops Cedarwood
-I apply on my wrists, behind my ears, collar bone, or the base of my brain.

5. Wellness Keeper
  • 10 drops Thieves
  • 10 drops Frankincense
  • 10 drops Lemon
  • 10 drops Raven
- I apply to the bottoms of my feet and spine every night before I retire, I also increase use when feeling a little below the wellness line or plan to travel. It’s important to remember that citrus oils, including Lemon, has photosensitivity properties, please do not wear this roller blend on sun exposed skin areas, which is why I put this one on at night or on my feet.  Sometimes I may add Oregano or Ginger to the recipe.

6. Seasonal Support
  • 15 drops Lemon
  • 15 drops Lavender
  • 10 drops Peppermint
- I apply behind ears, bottom of my feet, spine, or wrists. I sometimes even add in Copaiba to magnify the properties of other essential oils. Again, it's important to remember that citrus oils have photosensitivity properties, so I do not wear this roller blend on sun exposed skin areas.

7. Tummy (25 drop total)
  • 15 drops DiGize
  • 10 drops Peppermint
-I apply right onto my stomach or on bottom of feet.

8. Rise and Shine (20 drops)
  • 10 drops Peppermint
  • 10 drops Lemon
-I apply to my spine, bottom of my feet, or behind my ears. Remember, all citrus oils should not be worn on areas that are exposed to sun due to photosensitive properties. I sometimes even add Citrus Fresh to the mix.

9. Happy - about 30 to 40 drops total of essential oils that you love!
-I apply behind my ears, on my wrists, or on my collar bone. I love Stress Away and Citrus Fresh. My recipe would be:
  • 20 drops Citrus Fresh
  • 20 drops Stress Away
-You can customize this roller with essential oils that support your emotions and mood. Some other options that could be used are Valor, White Angelica, Joy, Peace and Calming, Orange, Lime, and Lemon!
