How To Make A Travel-sized Hand Purifier

DIY Waterless Hand Purifier

Homemade Waterless Hand Purifier

Keeping our hands clean is an important health habit for prevention of many common and seasonal illnesses. Proper recommendations can be followed on the CDC recommendations for proper handwashing.

Personally, I do not rely solely on hand sanitizer or purifiers to eradicate germs. Remember, the best way to stay healthy is by following the CDC's guidelines for proper handwashing and health hygiene habits.

However, not everyone has instantaneous access to a water source and soap at all times. For those situations, I like to make this DIY hand purifier that is convenient and highly portable to fit in any bag or purse. This is not a substitute for proper handwashing hygiene however.

With all the recent emphasis on hand sanitization and washing, most people are experiencing undernourished skin on their hands, especially around the knuckles. This DIY hand purifier may support the skin with ingredients such as Aloe Vera, Jojoba oil, and Vitamin E.

If you add witch hazel or alcohol to this hand purifier, you could introduce some antiviral or antimicrobial benefits. Witch hazel is reported to contain tannins which show some antiviral activity against influenza A and HPV (source). The CDC recommends at least a 60% concentration of alcohol to maintain
bactericidal properties.

Ingredients for DIY Hand Purifier:
  • 4 tbs. Organic Aloe Vera Gel
  • 2 tbs. Distilled Water
  • 1 tsp. Jojoba Oil
  • 1 tsp. Vitamin E Oil
  • 10-20 drops of Thieves Essential Oil
  • 10-20 drops of Peppermint Essential Oil
  • 10-20 drops of Lavender Essential Oil
  • 2 oz. Bottle
Optional: As mentioned above, witch hazel demonstrates some antiviral properties while adding alcohol (as long as it is above 60% final concentration of the above recipe) introduces bactericidal characteristics (source).

Directions for DIY Hand Purifier:
  • Add all ingredients to a measuring cup, stir and pour into bottle.

Recommended Containers:
  • Travel Bottles Travel Containers TSA Approved, 3oz Silicone Bottles (6 Pack)

Thieves Hand Sanitizer

Young Living has actually released their own hand sanitizer. Young Living claims that "Thieves Hand Sanitizer effectively eliminates common, harmful germs and bacteria!". It is available to order and available in various starter kits such as Thieves Starter Kit, Premium Starter Kit, and the Basic Starter Kit.

Thieves Hand Sanitizer claims to kick 99.99
percent of germs to the curb, but is formulated with denatured alcohol in it which is believed to have skin-drying side effects. If you need help ordering your first bottle of Thieves Hand Sanitizer, please consider reaching out.
