Making your own chest rubs is just another simple way that my family is able to control our exposure to unknown ingredients. Even though its one product, small changes lead to big changes over time. I believe we have to be aware of our everyday exposures because the more we limit the unknown or unwanted the better. Remember, we are here to share these recipes because we believe ingredients matter, especially the ones we interact with everyday and put onto our skin.  To learn more about products, ingredients, and unwanted chemicals, read our article: 5 Things EVERY Healthy Person Should Know!

These DIY chest rubs can be a great way to provide a refreshing aromatic experience when loved ones need it most. I found the need to support breathing during the colder months (folks of the northern climate). Some may find these recipes and essential oil aromas to be comforting when applied to the neck or chest. As a fitness enthusiast, I have also found a DIY chest rub may even create an uplifting and inspiring aroma when used before and during exercise. Lastly, these are a great gift option for introducing people essential oils and DIY recipes.

I'm going to share two recipes that we have used in our house. Please don't let the ingredient list and directions fool you, both are extremely easy.

Recipe 1

Ingredients for DIY Chest Rub:
  • Young Living Essential Oils - I enjoy using oils such as Raven, Peppermint, Eucalyptus, Lavender, or RC. (Of course, you're not limited to this list)
  • ¼ cup Shea Butter
  • ½ cup solid Organic Coconut Oil

Directions for DIY Chest Rub:
  1. First set up your double broiler with water (some readers report using a pot of water while hanging aglass measuring cup inside)
  2. Melt the Shea Butter and Organic Coconut Oil over medium heat. Do this slowly! Do not boil. Stir slowly and often as they liquefy.
  3. Once liquid, I remove from heat and pour the blend into a mixing bowl to add the essential oils. I typically add about 20 to 30 drops of essential oils when making the chest rub for adults, please use proper dilution for a chest rub for children.
  4. After stirring the blend, but the bowl in the refrigerator to bring back to a more solid form.
  5. When the blend has solidified in the refrigerator,  remove and allow it to softening to make using the electric mixer easier.
  6. Once softened, I use the electric hand mixer to whip the blend into a fluffy cream.
  7. I use a butter knife or spatula to transfer the chest rub into the desired glass jars.
  8. Store DIY chest rub in a cool temperature regulated area.
